As Amsterdams top cultural centre, Melkweg is famed for its concerts and club nights, but these days the venue is also equally appreciated for its film screenings, theatre performances, media art presentations, and photography exhibitions. Theres even a cafe-restaurant inside this former dairy factory (hence the name, which translates to The Milky Way). Recent musical guests have included Modeselektor, Janelle Monae, and the Gotan Project. Stop by the website to see whats on while youre in town, and to look up ticket information. Just walk a few steps from the Leidseplein square and youll find Melkweg and its huge variety of cultural possibilities right under your nose.

Seems to attract quite a young crowd of people. Music is 'eclectic' (ie a bit odd at times) and it gets pretty crowded later on. Often there is a choice of live or electronic music, so you can just move a round a bit to get what you want. small cover charge (I think 4 or 5 Euros though I can't remember exactly - it was a long night!). Friendly atmosphere, and would probably go back.
