German Singer Wins Eurovision
Depending on how you look at it, the annual Eurovision song competition is either an opportunity for some healthy, creative competition between European countries or simply a proper cheese-fest. Every year 25 countries choose one artist to represent the country with a pop song at this incredibly popular event. This year's edition drew 120 million television viewers from across the globe and 16 000 audience members at the competition in Oslo, Norway.
This year's surprise winner was Lena, a teenaged girl from Hannover, with the song "Satellite". Gaining 246 points from audience members and judges, Lena was far ahead from the runner up Turkey, who finished with 170 points.
During Eurovision's 55-year history, Germany has won the contest only once previously in 1982 with Nicole's "A Little Piece". Unsurprisingly, Lena has shot to stardom in Germany. Not bad for someone who just finished writing her high school exams!
