Tough Times for Tacheles

One of Berlin's cultural landmarks, the Tacheles building in Oranienburger Strasse, is under threat. The graffiti-covered building, home to galleries, artist residences, and and several cafes, bars, and even a cinema, is an icon of Berlin's famed alternative culture and lifestyle. However, while it did gain status as a historical landmark in 1992, the lease for the building signed by the artist collective in residence there already expired two years ago.

Just like the rest of Berlin, Tacheles is fighting a general commercialization of land and with such a central location it has been tough for the Tacheles artists to retain their beloved space.. The building, a former department store, was nearly demolished (and was in fact partially demolished) in the 90s until its current residents moved in and blocked the action.

While its future is uncertain, there's no doubt a visit to Tacheles is in order - it might be your last chance to see this landmark of Berlin culture!
