Winter Season in Berlin
The winter season is one of the most beautiful times of the year to travel throughout Europe as each city is lit up with thousands of sparkling lights. While it looks like snow is unfortunately not on the menu for the near future in Berlin (though who knows what the future holds for Christmas-time), milder weather is not necessarily bad news as it means more comfortable conditions for sightseeing and walks. Apart from the usual tourist spots in Berlin, December is the time of year when seasonal delights are upon us and that means shopping (a visit to the legendary KaDeWe is a must!) and a tour of the city's many lovely Christmas Markets.
Berlin's iconic avenue Unter den Linden will play host to one of the city's classiest Christmas Market, as will Breitscheidplatz near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in western Berlin. Along with the usual knick-knacks, treats, and hot drinks on sale, the fair at Alexanderplatz also features rides for the kids. The Gendarmenmarkt is the only paid market (though entry is just 1 euro), but it is one of the most beautiful as it is surrounded by gorgeously lit-up historic architecture. The Gendarmenmarkt is also a top choice for New Year's Eve festivities, as is the area before the Brandenburg Gate. Head to the Events section for more info!
