Editor's review
Chocolate has been made here at Erich Hamann Schokolade since 1912, when the son of a ship's captain decided a life on the ocean waves was not for him.
Instead he set out to alter the then established view that chocolate had to be sweet. He challenged this conventional wisdom by going heavy on the cocoa, and brought bitter chocolate to a first sceptical but later grateful public.
A lifetime's ambition was destroyed by British bombs during the second world war, and this was enough for Erich. He tried to rebuild, but died in 1949. The business could have died with him, had not his widow Anna taken the reins and pushed on with his plans.
The result is that today visitors to Erich Hamann Schokolade can buy some of the finest bitter, dark chocolate in the world.
