Five minutes walk from the centre, Bratislava's bus station is where you'll head when you're ready to trade the dodginess of Bratislava for the haughtiness of Vienna. The two closest capitals in the world are only about 70 minutes apart with a frequent and cheap bus connection. (If you're coming back to Bratislava, buy a return ticket - it's more expensive from Vienna.) Via Eurolines, you can take a bus to more than 20 other major European cities as well, and Slovak Lines will shuttle you across Slovakia until you beg for mercy. Bratislava is easy to escape from and by bus is the best way.

Pretty well maintaineded and easy enough to navigate and negotiate. Have fun watching the guys trying to force you into buying dodgy watches or other merchandise. They don't spend long pestering you, a simple wave of the hand or shake of the head generally sends them away. Then you can laugh at how they scatter when a policeman comes into view. Otherwise just the usual rules of being in a bus station. Keep your belongings close and your wits about you. Not a dangerous place.
