Brad Pitt reveals Budapest heartbreak

Hollywood star Brad Pitt, who's not short of female admirers, has revealed that it wasn't always plain-sailing in the romance department, and that he once had his heart broken in Budapest.

Back in 1989, when Brad was a struggling actor with few roles to his credit, he was engaged to fellow thespian Jill Schoelen.

Brad's lady won a role in Budapest, but after they'd been a few weeks apart, she persuaded him to fly over and see her.

"She called me up in Los Angeles and was crying on the phone, Pitt told UK daily The Sun.

She was lonely and there was a huge drama. At this point I had $800 to my name and I spent $600 of it getting a ticket from Los Angeles to Hungary to see her.'

Before he knew it, he was right there in Budapest. It all seemed the epitome of romance, what with communism having just been overthrown. But then things went sharply down hill.

"I got there, went straight to the set where she was filming and that night we went out to dinner. She told me that she had fallen in love with the director of the film. I was so shocked I said, 'I'm outta here.' "

Not having much in the way of cash, Brad was forced to spend a somewhat modest night out, although he wasn't quite alone.

"I spent my night in Budapest, sitting on a bench, smoking, with just a local bum to talk to who couldn't speak English. These are the days and nights you remember when you have success. I returned to America absolutely broke. This is why recognition does not bother me too much."

Thankfully, the experience didn't put Brad off Budapest, and actor was back last year to join his new lady Angelina Jolie, with whom he now has a family.
