Editor's review
The main Gdansk branch of the National Museum is housed in a former Franciscan Monastery that was intially freed up way back in 1555 during the Reformation. Gdansk was then one of the most protestant cities in the Polish Commonwealth. Since the pandemonium of the war years, the museum has been steadily improving. A treasure trove for art-lovers, the jewel in the crown is Hans Memling's apocalyptic 16th century altar-piece 'The Last Judgement.' For more modern gems, the Museum has a smashing new outlet at the baroque Opatow Palace.
