Polish valour became fabled across Europe during the Napoleonic era, when many Poles joined Napoleon, hoping that he would help liberate their partitioned country. It started well, but although Bonaparte was ultimately defeated, the epoch continues to capture the Poles' imagination. In 1806, Napoleon seized Gdansk (Danzig) and every year there are reenactments of parts of the campaign. Head over to the village of Bedomin for a swashbuckling day out.
