Celebration of Gunter Grass's 80th Birthday
Thu 4th
Oct
Despite the German author's birthday being October 16th, 1927, the city of Gdansk will celebrate to the fullest from the 4th to the 6th. Born in a small house which still stands today virtually as it did in 1927 in the Gdansk suburb of Wrzeszcz, Gunter Grass has repeatedly drawn on his Gdansk childhood in his work. The Tin Drum, part of his Danzig Trilogy, won the Nobel Prize for Literature and takes place in the Free City of Danzig (Gdansk) at the outbreak of WW2. Events in celebration of Grass's work and his characters will take place in Gdansk and Gdansk Wrzeszcz, including the premier of a play based on The Tin Drum, a retrospective of films based on his works and several different literary tours.
