First Step For Shakespearean Theatre

The cornerstone of a Shakespearean theatre has been laid in Gdansk on the site of its historic predecessor. The project, which will provide an echo of the city's golden era, has been many years in the making, and patrons include British Royal Prince Charles.

Celebrated film-maker and man of the theatre Andrzej Wajda joined Prime Minister Donald Tusk at the ceremony on September 14th, along with many distinguished thespians.

Besides fronting local endeavours, the original 17th Century playhouse hosted visiting troupes from England, who performed works for the wealthy patrician class of the city. The theatre was eventually levelled during the nineteenth century.

The new foundation will be a modern enterprise, although many Elizabethan motifs have been incorporated into the design. It is hoped that the building will be complete by 2013, and at a cost of about 19 million euro.
