Couple Reunited After 60 Years
An 84-year-old lady from Gdansk has married her childhood sweetheart after over half a century apart, divided by the Atlantic Ocean.
Last November, Danuta Lazorko received an unexpected phone call. It was from a gentleman she had not heard from for sixty years. A former professior at Ohio Universirty, Jerzy Krzyzanowski was in town to promote his new book. It was a bolt from the blue, after a legacy of war, underground resistance, soviet occupation and the entire Cold War saga.
Prior to the war, when Mrs Lazorko was a nurse, she and Krzyzanowski had been sweethearts in the picturesque old city of Lublin. Yet the ravages of war took their toll. Mr Krzyzanowski was eventually slung into a Soviet camp for three years. When he was released, the romance failed to rekindle. Both parties married separately, and Mr Krzyzanowski emigrated to America, where he had a successful career in academia.
Although both Lazorko and Krzyzanowski have grandchildren, their respective spouses passed away some time ago. But after the spur of the moment reunion last November, the spark was reignited, and the pair were in daily contact over the internet over the following months. Eventually, they decided to marry this May, and they will divide their time between America and Poland. The couple communicate in Polish, but the newly married Mrs Krzyzanowska says she has learnt one English phrase: I love you.
