'The Mole' to drill first underwater tunnel in Poland
Don't let the innocent name 'Mole' mislead you! The Mole is nickname of TBM - a 2,500 tone, 90 m long and 12.5 m wide tunnel boring machine, which is to drill the first underwater tunnel in Poland at Martwa Wisla river in Gdansk.
TBM has been reconstructed from a bore that had drilled a tunnel in Switzerland. It was being assembled for 9 months in a factory in Schwanau, Germany. Gigantic machine will arrive in Gdansk in multiple ship and truck transport and will have been assembled by the end of October. According to plan, drilling should commence at the beginning of 2013.
Preparing the underwater trail in Gdansk is a particularly difficult task because of ground looseness. To solidify it, engineers will inject to it bentonite suspension, and at the moment of drilling the immediate vicinity will be frozen.
It is expected that the tunnel will be ready by the end of 2014.
