State of Emergency After Heavy Snowfall
A 50 cm thick snow blanket covers wide parts of Kiev after the weekend's heavy snowfall,weekly Kyiv Post reports. The city's urban administration speaks of a once-in-a-century-event since the average monthly amount of snow at this time of the year was already reached on the first day of the cold spell.
The snowfall has lead to huge traffic jams, an extensive blocking of public transportation and the cancellation of fligths. Only the subways can run properly and operate in shorter intervals and for an extended time at the moment. Moreover, the Ukrainian army helps clearing the roads and towing broke down cars and trucks.
In addition, today, the 25th March, was announced a „snow day“ meaning a day-off for civil servants and public employees not taking part in the snow removal measures.
