Whereas it is just about possible to get by in Kiev without any knowledge of Russian or Ukrainian, life will certainly be much easier for you if speak a bit of one or the other. There's only so many times you can play pantomimes with shop assistants, or pretend not to understand your landlady's demands for rent payments before your life becomes a series of farcical episodes you'd rather avoid.
