Editor's review
The Starmach Gallery was founded in 1989 by two Cracovian art-historians, Teresa and Andrzej Starmach. Originally based in a cellar, the enterprise switched to Podgorze in 1997 where the owners had discovered a collapsing synagogue that offered inspiring prospects for renovation. After thorough work on the interior, the gallery opened and it has since taken its place as one of the most distinguished galleries of contemporary art in Poland. The question as to whether a former house of prayer is a fitting place for an art gallery will probably re-ignite (this district housed the war-time ghetto). However, that said, it could also be argued that the Starmachs were amongst the first to have the courage to rejuvenate this god-forsaken district.

Think the Chelsea District of New York and you'll get somewhere close to the vibe of Starmach in Podgorze. Without a doubt the most professional private gallery in Krakow (possibly Poland) showcasing outstanding contemporary artists. Its a large warehouse space, beautifully adapted, and there are a number of top-drawer gallery catalogues availabletoo. Well worth going across the river to see. Just check opening times before you head off!
