Joëlle Léandre is an uncompromising artist and a total double bass player. Her playing is characterized by an outstanding instrumental technique, unlimited imagination and great charisma. She studied at the Conservatory in Paris and later at the Center for the Arts in Buffalo. They composed especially for her Giacinto Scelsi and John Cage. At the same time, Léandre became fully involved in the early activities of the free improv scene, cooperating with the most important representatives of the genre. She recorded with Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Peter Kowald, Fred Frith and many others. In her activities, the artist does not shun social, political or feminist themes,
In recent years (starting with the solo concert during KJJ 2014) she has become a much more frequent guest in Poland, among others due to the Krakow Jazz Autumn festival and Warsaw's Ad Libitum. It was during the Krakow Jazz Autumn that Léandre celebrated the 40th anniversary of her artistic activity. Extensive releases have been published in Poland, in 2016 an eight-disc set A Woman's Work by Not Two Records, and a three-disc String Garden (Fundacja Czekaj !, 2018).
Zlatko Kaučič developed his career for many years away from his native Slovenia - in Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. He collaborated with the most important representatives of the European avant-garde trend, including Evan Parker, Peter Brotzmann, Misha Mengelberg and Irene Schweizer. This versatile drummer also composes music for theater and dance, is involved in music education, conducts workshops. In 2018, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of artistic activity, the Not Two Records released a five-disc edition of Diversity, containing recordings from 2012-2017 with such artists as Lotte Anker, Evan Parker, Agusti Fernandez, Phil Minton and Rafał Mazur.
During the first day of their residence, Léandre and Kaučič will be accompanied by two Polish artists: Mateusz Rybicki and Zbigniew Kozera. They have been working together for years, they are active on the experimental music scene in Wrocław. They collaborated with Piotr Damasiewicz, Wacław Zimpl and Mikołaj Trzaska. Their jointly recorded album Xu (Multikulti, 2017) perfectly captures how well these two musicians understand each other. Rybicki and Kozera will undoubtedly be worthy - though not obvious - companions of musical explorations for Léandre and Kaučič. The obvious is boring.
