Traditional Polish Wigilia Meal // Eataway
Wigilia - or Christmas Eve - is one of the most important holidays in Poland. The meal shared on Wigilia is one with no meat and there is always an empty space left at the table for the 'unexpected guest.' Come and share in the traditions of a Polish Wigilia meal and learn why there is straw underneath the tablecloth, why we share oplatek (Christmas wafer), and why animals talk on this special night. Since this is Christmas Eve, the meal is free. Donations to offset the price of the food will be gladly accepted.

SOUPS
Barszcz - a beet broth soup served with uszka (mini mushroomed filled dumplings).
Mushroom Soup - a hearty soup filled with mushrooms and homemade noodles.

Fried Fish - though carp is the traditional fish served on Christmas Eve, we will have battered fried whitefish.
Baked Shrimp Scampi - perhaps not so traditional in Polish homes, my mother always made shrimp scampi on Christmas Eve in our home. Served with pasta.

Pierogi - homemade dumplings filled with either potato and cheese or sauerkraut and mushrooms.
Cabbage and Mushrooms (or Peas) - slowly braised and served hot as an accompaniment to our meal.
Polish Potato Salad - a potato salad made with carrots, peas, hard-boiled eggs, apples, onions, and pickles in a mayonnaise base - another traditional Polish food.
Kutia - a mix of poppyseeds, grains, honey, fruits, and nuts slow cooked in milk and served cold. There are many legends as to why this is eaten on Christmas Eve.
