Messenger bikes

when I was in Cracow I saw a guy and a girl on fixed gear messenger bikes, riding through the main square. Is there a courier community in cracow? Are there decent places to ride that won't kill you with cobblestones or curbs? It was refreshing to see that not everyone had either an absurdly 'pimped' mountain bike or an old goofy bike that looks like it was stolen from the 'sound of music' set.
