I am visiting Krakow in July and my friends would like to visit the camps at Oswiecim. I have heard that you cannot now walk around Auschwitz 1 without a guide and that there is a small charge. Is this true ?

this is true up to 3pm. however visit camp 2 first then go to camp 1 after 3pm. guided tours are not worth it they herd you to fast and miss too much. the guide books are good and cheap. hope this helps

Alternatively get there early. It is free entry and no guide necessary pre 10.00am
