With 'retro' making a comeback, what better time to launch a restaurant that revives classics of Polish life during the communist era?
Kogel-mogel, just off the Main Square in the Old Town, does this exceptionally well. It is decorated with an eye to the events of the past half-century in Poland, while at the same time presenting an upmarket presence which fits perfectly with tourists looking to get a taste of the past, and locals looking for a venue for light-hearted reminiscence in which to celebrate a special occasion.
If that appears at first sight to be a bit of a mixed bag, it's hardly surprising. The restaurant's name reflects a popular dessert of days gone by - based on egg and sugar, and sublimely delicious when served with fresh raspberries - but is also a phrase best translated to English at 'mish-mash', perfectly representing the atmosphere and daily life of the times.
There is seating for around 70, in three separate rooms, and a garden for the summer. Expect to spend a modest 50 zl or so for soup, main course and drink - but don't miss the opportunity to push the boat out and sample some of the dishes which you really won't find anywhere else these days.

We ate here on our second night and it's all we've been able to think of (food wise) since! The food was lovely and pleased all in our party. The food was backed up by brilliant service and quality wine, which always helps! We have friends that are flying out today to join us and are planning to take them here Sunday evening. Well worth a visit peeps!
one of the worst restaurants I have ever eaten in. The menu describes the pork as being grown outdoors and fed on acorns, I have eaten acorn fed pork and it is very good, but in this case the pork is cheep factory produced meat, the description is fabricated as part of the restaurants 'theme'. My heavily pregnant wife was served a completely raw pork schnitzel, outside browned, inside cold, completely raw, probably was frozen when fried for a couple of minutes. My meal was not even to the standard of most Bar mleczny. We live near Krakow and have tried a lot of resterants. This is one to avoid.
A highly recommendable restaurant ! We celebrated a special occasion with nine persons and were made to feel at home. Excellent food and unobtrusive yet attentive waiting. Very professional and good value for money !
Cannot rate it highly enough. By far our best restaurant in Krakow (and we tried a LOT of them during our holiday here!).
Didn't really see much of the 'retro' look here. What I did find was an extremely good restaurant with an excellent menu and food that did not disappoint. Drinks and food prices are on the high side (for Krakow) but one does not mind paying that bit extra for food of this quality. I will definitely be recommending this place to my friends, and will be back. Bravo!
Absolutely delicious meal! We tried the steak and it was cooked perfectly. Fast, friendly service. A real find in Krakow
