Are you fed up with the loud and crowded city, or maybe you're simply into exploring Polish countryside? Well, when visiting “Pod Bazantami” (“Under Pheasants”), a traditional Polish restaurant on the outskirts of the Ojcow National Park, you can have both. Ojcow is a fantastic Krakow getaway destination less than 40 minute drive from the city centre, with breathtaking Jurassic landscapes, and a royal castle resembling miniature Wawel. And as the surrounding itself, the restaurant is also somewhat unique. The business was opened in 1972, as one of the first of this type in then communist Poland, and operates only in spring and summer. Despite the passage of years, the restaurant still remains a family business, run by Mr. Piotr Witkos, who embodies the best of Krakow old school gastronomy. The name comes from the multitude of pheasants that reign not only the restaurant’s plates, but also the whole area of Ojcow. But “Pod Bazantami” is famous not only for the for lip-smacking, traditional Polish cuisine prepared on a traditional stove, but also for its warm family atmosphere. After all, not many places serve game on a veranda with a view of nature, and a breath of fresh air right? To add to the picture, the service is very professional and discrete, and the owner himself personally oversees that his guests are served the best of the best and having a special time. And it is exactly why for over 40 years “Pod Bazantami” has hosted thousands of visitors from around the world, including some of the greatest Polish artists and writers. Though finding the place might prove a bit challenging, as it's off the beaten track, it’s worth to join “Pod Bazantami” for a cultural and culinary journey.
