Editor's review
Welcome to Slovenia's oldest, continually operating cultural institution. Established in 1810, that might not be such a winning endorsement for Slovenian affairs over the past two centuries, but leave it to plants to not get caught up in national trifles. Inside the Gardens you'll be able to amble amongst over 4,500 different plant species, one third of which are native (or 'autochthonous' if you prefer), while the rest are ex-pat plants from other green parts of the planet. The Botanical Gardens run educational programmes and play an important role in protecting Slovenia's endemic (sickly) and endangered (rare) species. And the best part? It's cuffo (free!). Open daily; April to October 7:00 - 19:00 (-20:00 July & August), November to March 7:00 - 17:00.
