Commonly known as Boris Bikes (after mayor Boris Johnson), Barclays Cycle Hire is a public bicycle rental system available at blue docking stations across the city centre. For a small fee, these sturdy bikes can be rented 24-hours a day, and non-members need only a credit or debit card to rent. Follow the instructions on a docking station’s self-service machine, which will read your card and print out a cycle release code. Entering this code next to the bike of your choice will release it. To return, simply find an empty dock and push in the bike until it is securely locked in place. At the time of writing, it was possible to hire a Boris Bike for a £1 24-hour access fee, and pay nothing for a usage of 30 minutes or less. Fees increase with usage.
