A small island attached to the historic Trinity district of Minsk by a footbridge, the Isle of Tears is a monument dedicated to the soldiers who perished in the nine-year conflict involving Soviet forces in Afghanistan (1979 - 1988). Built at the end of the war in 1988, the island's focal point is a small chapel surrounded by statues of those who were left to mourn the dead - widows, mothers, sisters. Inside the names of over 700 Belarusian soldiers who died in the war are inscribed. You'll also find a statue of a young guardian angel who continues to literally shed tears for those lost in violent conflict worldwide.

Quite moving indeed... Although the original plan was to pay tribute to soldiers who died in Afghanistan, the memorial unveiled in 1996 is dedicated to all Sons of their Home Country who died overseas...
