Editor's review
This impressive square (technically a circle), a central landmark in Minsk, is a memorial to those who perished World War 2, known in Belarus as the Great Patriotic War. At its centre stands a 40m-high obelisk with a 3-metre replica of the Order of Victory (the highest Soviet military decoration) at its peak. At the base of the obelisk are several bronze relief images and bronze wreaths signifying various aspects of the war and its fallen. The square and obelisk was constructed in 1954, and an eternal flame was added in 1961. Access the memorial from an underground passage connected to the Victory Square (Ploschad Pobedy) metro station, which will also walk you by a memorial hall with a glass wreath at its centre.
