Editor's review
It's difficult to miss this huge monument which pays tribute to the workers protest of 1956. The monument comprises of two bound 20m tall crosses and the unveiling, which was attended by more than 100,000 people, was held on the 25th anniversary of the strike. The strike was the first wide scale demonstration in the former Soviet Bloc and helped instigate many more across neighbouring countries under communist rule. City officials ignored requests for better working conditions and things soon turned ugly - over 70 people were killed and some 900 were wounded in the protest.
