Biking Gains Popularity Among Praguers
The number of Prague residents using their bikes on a regular basis has doubled in the last two years. According to the news portal Prague Daily Monitor, over 100,000 out of 1,3 million inhabitants go to work, the city centre or public offices by bike every day. Adding the number of freetime and sport bikers, about a quarter of the population is keen on this kind of transportation.
The numbers were agreggated by the polling agency GfK following an assignment by the Prague City Hall. The researchers also found out that the popularity of bicycles doesn't affect the usage of public transportation. However, bikers rather refrain from driving by car, because it is easier to avoid the notorious traffic jams in the city with the two-tyred vehicles.
On the other hand, for many Praguers there are still reasons to favour other means of transportation; they are afraid of driving next to cars and miss cycle lanes and bike parking spaces. But, reacting to the survey, the municipality announced that 300 new bike cycle lanes will be built in the course of this year.
