Riga International Airport
Riga International Airport is one of the fastest growing in the world. Built in 1973 and renovated in 2001, the airport ('lidosta' in Latvian) has seen a steady increase in passengers in recent years. In 1998 it handled 550,000 passengers and that number has gone up every year, reaching 1,900,000 passengers in 2005. This year a new south terminal has been completed - and the plans for development don't stop there. The addition of a new terminal will give Riga's airport an annual capacity of a whopping ten million passengers!
Thanks to the refurbishment of 2001 (designed to coincide with the city's 800th birthday), Riga International Aiport is a sleek, modern and functional affair. All the facilities you need are there, such as bureaux de change, ATMs and left luggage, whilst getting through security, passport control and baggage is usually much easier than at larger airports.
Getting into the city is simple too. Cover the 13km in a cab for less than 10 lats (about 15 Euros), or hop on the number 22 city bus to Central Station for 0.2 lat, or the airport express 22a to Reval Hotel for 0.25 lat. Both are in the city centre. You shouldn't expect to wait more than 15-20 mins for one and the journey time is around 30 minutes.
