Bulgaria plans smoking ban

The Bulgarian government is set to extend its smoking ban after judging that little has changed since the original raft of legislation was passed.

Currently, it is illegal to smoke in offices, hospitals and on public transport. Likewise, bars and restaurants must provide a designated space for non-smokers.

However, the regulations have been widely ignored, largely owing to the sheer proportion of puffers in the country.

According to a 2010 Eurobarometer survey, Bulgaria has the second highest level of tobacco consumption in the EU (Greece wins the prize for most committed tokers).

Some 39 percent of the adult population are declared puffers, while one in three 13-15-year-olds also smoke.

The government is now proposing banning smoking in all indoor public places. Meanwhile, the ban will also be extended to outside nurseries, kindergartens and schools.

If the measures are approved by parliament, the amended law will come into effect as of 1 June 2012.
