Editor's review
Fans of The Third Man, music lovers and one-eyed graverobbers will all find much to savour here. The largest of Vienna's cemeteries contains approximately 3 million souls. That said, collating numbers seems to diminish the romance of the place - the best thing would be simply to float around like an easygoing ghost. But if time is short, top of most travellers' lists will be the assembly of musical giants. Turn the corner at plot 32a and you'll find yourself confronted by the likes of Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and most of the Strauss family. Other points of interest include the Russian Orthodox section, the Muslim section, the Soviet War Dead, and perhaps most poignantly, the vast and overgrown Jewish section. The gargantuan focal point for the entire cemetery is the Dr Karl Lueger Church, built by Max Hegele, a pupil of trail-blazer Otto Wagner.
