Editor's review
The Vienna of the early 20s is usually remembered as a desperately poor place battling against astronomical inflation. But somehow the city managed to find the funds to build this flight of fancy. Opened in 1926, the Amalienbad boasts one of the most distinctive interiors of its kind, chock-full of exotic art deco details. Some of the interiors look as if they were built for film stars, but in fact, this was a socialist enterprise that aimed to bring healthy recreational facilities to the man in the street. To sample some old school aquatic adventures, hop on the U1 metro line south to Reumannplatz.
