Vienna restaurant rises in world top 50 list

A Viennese restaurant has been voted 11th best on the globe, according to the annual World's Best 50 Restaurants list, organised by the UK's Restaurant magazine.

Steirereck, which is located in the city's leafy Stadtpark, made the list for the fourth year running, moving up from 22nd to 11th place this year.

Steirerecks commitment to indigenous sourcing, the revival of forgotten dishes and the promotion of sustainability across the food chain have earned it the inaugural Slow Food Award at this years awards and it has also risen steadily up the list, summarised Restaurant magazine's so-called World's 50 Best Best Restaurants Academy.

The Academy is made up of close to 6000 industry insiders, including chefs, critics and gourmets.

Steirereck, which specialises in dishes from Austria's Styria region, was the only Austrian restaurant to make it into the top 50 this year, in a list that was dominated by American eateries.

Perhaps its because the restaurant has been in the family for more than 40 years, but Steirerecks chef-owner Heinz Reitbauer has been something of an unsung culinary hero until now, the Academy concluded.

This year's overall winner was Danish restaurant Nobu, for the third time running.
