The pride of Lithuania, Trakai is the only island castle in all of Eastern Europe. Sometimes called "Little Marienburg" due to its resemblance to Malbork Castle, this little gem dates back to the 14th century and was completed in 1409 by Vytautus the Great, who died inside. Losing importance after the Teutons were vanquished at the Battle of Grunwald, the castle slowly began to deteriorate before being destroyed by those nagging Russians in the 17th century. It was completely rebuilt after WW2 and is now a major LT tourist attraction. A popular place for weddings, picnics and picture-taking, the castle holds a historical museum exhibiting many treasures found at the site. Guided tours of the castle are available (40, 50lt). Admission to the castle is 10 lt.

Thanks to my New Found Lithuanian Family I got to enjoy this Historic Place. The tour was Very interesting. Parts of the castle had heated floors, we're so smart :-) I would recommend the drive from anywhere in Lietuva to see this.
A stunning place to visit. This would be my perfect home (if the weather was better than when we visited!)
