The largest contemporary art venue in the Baltics, CAC (SMC in Lithuanian) is pretty much the place to go if you want to see some art while you're in Vilnius. Located near Town Hall in the centre of Vilnius, it's hard to avoid. Here you can catch up with the latest trends in international art, catch up with friends in the cafe or catch some sun in the courtyard - actually, CAC has become quite a popular meeting place. With five exhibition halls and 2400 square metres of space, CAC is so big it almost feels a little empty sometimes. (The people to art ratio in the image above is a bit unbalanced, we'd say.) In fact, it's a bit like an airplane hangar, which might explain the large airplane wing being used as the ticket desk... At any rate, drop in - you're not cutting edge until you check it out. Open 12:00 - 19:30, closed Mondays; 6 lt entry (discount on Wednesday!).

Last time I was there they had a sculpture of a 9 year old kid that looked so real I had leave...
I've been to SMC a few times and I'm always a little disappointed by the curator's predilection towards video art (which has been painfully boring in my experience). In fact, if you go out and video one thing for 36 hours, you can probably get a show here. Aside from that, you'll see some cool stuff in here, but you're right - the white walls can be a bit much. All told, it's a good museum, cheap, and definitely worth a visit.
