Although it only opened in 2009, the National Art Gallery, a branch of the Lithuanian National Museum in Vilnius, is already an important venue for exhibitions of contemporary work.
It houses a permanent exhibition of Lithuanian art from 1900 to the present day, and boasts some 46,000 pieces in all. The gallery also hosts regular temporary exhibitions charting developments and new movements in Lithuanian art of the 20th and 21st centuries, so it's worth checking out the current programme to see what's on offer before you arrive.
As well as being an important repository of artwork, the gallery provides a valuable service for academics and researchers, thanks to its extensive archive and library.
