In a city of so many fine churches, the cathedral itself comes as something of a let down. But to be fair, this old stalwart has had more than its fair share of sackings and burnings. And the Soviets turned the whole thing into a picture gallery, dispatching various features (both inside and out) in the process. All the same, the cathedral remains a focal point, and it does have a certain austere grandeur. Not to be missed is the chapel of St. Casimir. Besides many other fine features, the chapel has some fantastic frescoes. However, surely the Italian artist is taking the mickey out of those mustachioed noblemen?
