UEFA Smells A Rat
One of Lithuania's leading soccer teams has become embroiled in a UEFA disciplinary case. The affair harks back to last year's Intertoto Cup, when FK Zalgiras Vilnius beat Greece's Egaleo FC 3-1 in a third round play-off.
The Vilnius team emerges unblemished from the action. Rather, the finger has been pointed at the Greeks, who are alleged to have fielded "a team that was far from being the club's top side." This was not only "in breach of fundamental UEFA rules" but also "ran the risk of creating favourable conditions for illegal betting practices" according to the European association.
Disciplinary proceedings have been launched against the Greek club, who are deemed to have violated "the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship - bringing the sport of football and UEFA into disrepute."
