FG confers citizenship on 26 US, UK citizens
Tuesday, July 14, 2009 THE Federal Government on Monday, conferred Nigerian citizenship on 13 Americans, 13 British and 179 other nationals who have agreed to become Nigerians either by naturalisation or registration. advertisement Minister of Interior, Major General Godwin Abbe (Rtd), who presented the beneficiaries with the Nigeria citizenship certificates in Abuja at a ceremony held at Sheraton Hotel and Towers, said that President Umaru Yar Adua graciously approved the total of 233 for citizenship conferment out of the over 4,000 applications by the foreigners. According to the breakdown given by the Minister, 83 of the beneficiaries were granted citizenship by naturalization, while 150 others obtained citizenship by registration, with Lebanese topping the list with a total of 72 persons. Interestingly, the country has in the recent time recorded one of the highest numbers of Americans and Britons, willing to become Nigerians in spite of the most touted criticism of Nigeria as one of the most corrupt and underdeveloped countries in Africa.
