Polish Athletes Return from Barcelona
The Polish athletic team has returned from Barcelona, nine medals in tow, where they had been competing at the European Athletic Championships from 27 July to 1 August. The event brings together all European nations to compete in between Olympics, similar to the Commonwealth Games..
The nine medals won by Poles put the team in 8th place overall within this year's ranking, with 2 golds, 2 silvers, and 5 bronze medals. Marcin Lewandowski (800m) and Piotr Malachowski (discus) won gold medals for their performances at the championship. Winning silver were Grzegorz Sudol in the 50k walk and Tomasz Majewski in shot putt. Finally, taking home the bronze were Joanna Kwasniewski in discus, Anita Wlodarczyk in hammer throw, Adam Kszczot in 800m, Przemyslaw Czerwinski in pole vault, as well as the 4 x 100 relay team.
Poland is now in 7the place in the overall European Championship ranking with 37 medals since the event began in 1934. This year's result was Poland's best showing since 1974 when they returned with 10 medals.
