Pod Berlami, which means 'Under the Sceptres', takes its name from the insignia of the region's ancient university, the Jagiellonian in Cracow. The pension is owned by that venerable institution, and perhaps you'll meet a moustachioed old professor enjoying a glass of wine in the rather congenial wine bar downstairs. The pension offers thirty-six places, in singles, doubles and apartments. Rooms are simply and comfortably furnished, and each comes with shower, television and satellite television (academics naturally like to be kept abreast of all that's happening in the world!). Pod Berlami can also organize expeditions into the countryside and introductions to folk culture. A good value choice.

We've found Pod Berlami by chance. The staff is nice, and the price was right for the warm and clean room we've got. I would recommend it to everybody who likes to stay so close to the city center undisturbed.
We were booked into Pod Berlami by "Tatra Tours", and didn't regret it for a moment - it compared favourably with other hotels we've stayed at in the town. The ultimate endorsement, we've booked to spend New Year 2008 there. I'm slightly disappointed that they seem to have stopped offering a "half board" option, but Zakopane has plenty of good eateries.
It's been almost three years since I stayed in the Pod Berlami Guest House. I remember is being very comfortable and affordable. The staff are nice and the food is lovely. We are coming back to Zakopane for Christmas and I am really disappointed that the Pod Berlami Guest House might be fully booked so we cannot stay :( Does anyone have any other recommendations?
I'm puzzled by Alison's comments, maybe a little Brit abroad paranoia seeping in there! The people were lovely and the tax on top is just that and nothing sinister! Had a great stay and am going back again.
The place was clean and sufficient but I feel the people could have been more friendly. I certainly was the talk of the place being the only English person there and not necessarily in the nicest way. Also I was charged extra for 'tax' when I left which I did not see written down on their receipt, which I suspect was some pocket money. I think it would be OK if you were Polish but I wouldn't recommend it to English people.
I have stayed in Pod Berlami twice now and are going again this year, with my family and have always had a very comfortable and welcoming stay. The staff are friendly and helpful. This is a beautiful area to stay in expecially when its snowing. I highly recommend it.
