Olympian Future For Zakopane?
2022 may sound like a long way away, but tongues have already started wagging about the possibility of a joint bid for the Winter Olympics by Poland and Slovakia.
During the Forum of Skiing Towns held in Zakopane last week, Peter Chudy, head of the Tourist Association in the High Tatras, raised the prospect of a Polish-Slovakian coalition. The action would focus on Zakopane and the Slovakian town of Poprad.
Mayor of Zakopane Janusz Majcher is in favour of the idea. However, he believes that bringing a larger city into the equation is essential, not least for infrastructure reasons. Hence he has proposed bringing the southern Polish city of Krakow into the scheme.
A formal decision by the International Olympic Committee will be made in three years time regarding who wins the rights to host the competition.
Poprad has thrown its hat into the ring three times as a host of the games, but each time it has lost out to larger cities.
