Stay safe on the slopes
Safety on the slopes around Zakopane is at the centre of attention this month, following the introduction of a new law about protective gear. From January 1, anyone aged 16 or under must wear a helmet when ski-ing. Children who do not have the right equipment wil be turned away from the slopes, and their parents or guardians will be fined if they allow their charges to ski unprotected. However, safety experts from the Tatra Mountain Rescue Team said they wanted everyone on the slopes to wear the proper gear - whatever their age. Police in Zakopane have also warned that they will take a hard line on skiers caught on the slopes under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Ski facility operators have been urged to report suspected cases - and those skiers who test positive will be fined.
