A place with an unique and fascinating history. Home of the rather eccentric and extremely wealthy Stephen Courtauld and his wife in Africa, a hub of intellectual and artistic bonhomie in the 1970's, La Rochelle was ultimately gifted to the National Trust of Zimbabwe, and has since been used in various capacities, the building most recently having been turned into a splendid boutique hotel. The gardens continue to be run by the Trust, and are magnificent in their own right, and worth wandering around, even if you are not a botanist. A faded wonder of a bygone age.
